Later school opening hours

Dear Headmaster,

I believe that opening hours of the school must change. The reason I believe this because there are many points, that i will explain, which show that later opening hours will have a positive outcomes for the school.

My first point is that later school opening hours will improve our focuss. In my own experiences when I feel tired and I am so focussed on thinking about my sleep when i get home that  I lack concentration in my work for a lot of the school day. This means I haven’t learnt anything in school which contradicts the whole point of school. Why should we attend place were learning takes place if we are not going to learn?

Students should be more alert in the mornings to avoid accidents. Statistically teenagers are involved in accidents in the morning because they have not had enough sleep to be alert in the morning. We are weary and tired in the morning which heavily affects our eye sight, concentration and hearing. We end up caring more for sleep then noticing our surroundings.

Melatonin ,also known as the darkness hormone, makes us sleep later than we should. For teenagers melatonin, which help you sleep, kick in at about 1am. most students wakes up at around 7am. This means we only get 6 hours of sleep which is extremely unhealthy as the good amount would be 9-10 hours of sleep. It’s is proven that bad sleep leads to negative activity and barley affects our daily routine.

If we don’t have enough sleep we will also fail to maintain focus. We will be busy daydreaming about wanting to sleep that we won’t do our work and not pay any attention. This would completely contradict the point of school. What’s the actual point of school is we are not going to be learn?

After school sports, fast food, retail employers, and other extracurricular pursuits quickly adjusted to this earlier starting, and ending the school day were put into place in the latter part of the 20th century. Before students of all ages, like most working adults, started school closer to 9 a.m. Even history supports delaying open hours for school.

I Given what we now know, it is negligent not to work to return to a later school opening hours. Yes, changing school hours is challenging. Politics, money and misunderstanding often override the best interests of students, teachers and communities. Collective action on a national scale may turn out to be the only way to ensure that all public schools can set hours compatible with health, safety, equity, and learning.  School should support the needs of students not the other way round.

Even more disturbingly, starting school at these hours has now been linked not only to widespread sleep deprivation but also to a host of physical, psychological, and educational problems. Meanwhile, no research has shown any benefit to requiring any child, of any age, to start instruction before 8 am however we would be better off starting at 9am.

There was a huge serve took place. The study was the first to examine multiple schools in various locations across the United States. Data were collected from eight schools that moved to later start times. Researchers surveyed St. Louis Park High School, Mahtomedi High School, Woodbury High School, Park High School, and East Ridge High School in Minnesota; Boulder High School and Fairview High School in Colorado; and Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming.Students were individually questioned about their daily activities, substance use, and sleep habits. Researchers then examined various health factors after the change in school start time and compared them with national average data. The study also collected comparative data about students’ academic performance, including grades, attendance, tardiness, and performance on state and national standardized tests. The car crash data were examined for the communities surrounding the participating high schools.”Our research provides evidence of clear benefits for students whose high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later,” says Wahlstrom. “More research needs to be done, but these findings are substantive and should provide more information for school districts considering a change in start time.” As you can see it has positively affected many school.

In conclusion we would be much improved if we open our school later which also decreases many issues among our pupils.

Should 16 year old receive the vote?

Aguement against

When your sixteen many important challenges in life occur. These are things like picking up your siblings from school, getting a job doing your GCSEs etc.Given them the votes simply just piles up the pressure, and isn’t that what teenagers are always complaining about? They always say we have to much pressure, too much work,no time and given them the vote just adds to this series of moaning.

Many people say that the reason sixteen year olds are not capable enough to vote however they do many things that could be seen as more important then the vote. They work and receive a wage and do life changing exams. If they can do how can they not easily choose a leader for their country which also effects them.
